CLIMATE CHANGE

I support the manifesto: 'Our Plan for Guernsey: 2025-29 And Beyond'.

HARNESSING OUR CLIMATE TRANSITION

Seizing the opportunities provided by the global transition to a low carbon economy is key to a resilient and prosperous future. Responsible management of existing resources whilst embracing renewable energy, such as wind, will deliver the electricity strategy, enhance our energy security, diversify our economy, and bolster our trading relationships. We want every islander to have a stake in Guernsey’s climate transition. We must empower our finance sector, modernise our infrastructure, and invest in the skills of our workforce to ensure everyone has the chance to benefit from our community’s future. Key policies we support:

  1. Ensuring the timely delivery of Guernsey’s 2020 Climate Change Policy, which set the target to be carbon neutral by 2050, whilst implementing practical additional measures to achieve net zero faster.

  2. Giving islanders a platform to build support for and shape the net zero transition by creating a citizens’ assembly.

  3. Natural solutions like coastal defenses and flood protection to mitigate the impact of climate change on Guernsey.

  4. Investment in skills and training to ensure that the whole community benefits from a net zero future.

NAVIGATING TO NET ZERO

Government must support the adoption of a net zero pathway in line with the Paris Agreement to ensure that Guernsey can maintain and enhance its international standing.

We support:

  • Ensuring the timely delivery of Guernsey’s 2020 Climate Change Policy, which set the target to be carbon neutral by 2050, whilst implementing practical additional measures to achieve net zero faster.

  • Giving islanders a platform to build support for and shape the net zero transition by creating a citizens’ assembly.

  • Efforts to commission a detailed scientific review of the threats posed by climate change to Guernsey and incorporate these findings into our net zero transition plan.

REAPING THE REWARDS OF NET ZERO

Only a bold, proactive outlook, embedded in government strategy, can maximise the revenues and benefits of Guernsey’s climate transition for the whole community.

We support:

  • The development of a sustainable finance strategy that builds on Guernsey’s established strengths and grows this vital sector.

  • Creating opportunities for sustainable infrastructure like an offshore wind farm to increase our energy security and reduce emissions.

  • Investment in skills and training to ensure that the whole community benefits from a net zero future.

MAKING THE TRANSITION FAIR

We are determined to make our transition a success for everyone in Guernsey and consistent with the Strategy for Nature. Government must be committed to ensuring real progress is made over the next decade.

We support:

  • Efforts to ensure that the transition is not undermined by ongoing investment in carbon-intensive industries.

  • Workers in industries impacted by the transition to net zero.

  • Measures to ensure the cost of environmental damage is covered by the business responsible rather than the taxpayer.

  • Efforts to account for nature’s economic, social and environmental value in all areas of policymaking.

  • Natural solutions like coastal defenses and flood protection to mitigate the impact of climate change on Guernsey.

  • Recognising the importance of biodiversity in supporting healthy ecosystems through processes such as carbon capture
